Samsung patent hints at a smartphone with wraparound display

Global smartphone shipments continue to decline and phone manufacturers have realised that there’s a dire need for innovation in their offerings. Samsung is one of the companies that is working on a foldable phone with the hope of offering a new take on the same old form factor. While the super expensive Samsung Galaxy Fold is off to a rocky start, it seems like the South Korean tech company might soon look into other ideas. As per a new patent filed by the company, reported by LetsGoDigital, it might be working on a handset where the display wraps around an edge and extends to the device’s back. The patent is titled 'Electronic Device Having Plurality of Display and Method for Controlling Same'.

The patent images suggest Samsung could be working on a design that is somewhat similar to the Vivo Nex Dual Display smartphone. However, while the Vivo Nex features a secondary display on the back, the Samsung patent suggests that there could be three edges that sport a display. The patent describes the phone with "a display configured to include a first surface in a first direction, a second surface in a second direction opposite to the first direction, and a third surface enclosing at least a portion of the space formed between the first surface and the second surface." This third surface could be an edge that connects the first and second surface.

The drawings above suggest how the displays on the phone could be used to capture photos or quickly glance at a notification. If Samsung does end up integrating the patented design, it would be interesting to see how it is actually implemented. When spent some time with the Vivo Nex Dual Display, we found that the dual display on the device was useful in only a handful of situations.
